Todaiji and the Great Buddha

Daibutsuden

In the winter holiday, for the first time in a long time I went to Nara. It was a cold and rainy day, but that did not stop it being a fun day. I do not like Nara city so much, but Nara Park is stunningly beautiful. The park is so big and natural, you can see beautiful mountains and there are lots of deer. It is a really wonderful place. Todaiji Temple is in Nara Park. I think this is such a historical and important temple. I live in Kyoto, because I love temples and shrines, but my favorite temple in Japan is Nara's Todaiji Temple. until 1998 the Daibutsuden (the main hall containing the Great Buddha) was the biggest wooden structure in the world. Inside you can find the Great Buddha.  The Buddha is enormous, yet his face looks so amazingly kind. His hand looks alive. When I went to Thailand, I saw the Great Buddha in Bangkok, but for me Todaiji's Great Buddha is more impressive. The Daibutsu really looks alive. There is another statue in the Daibusden, the Guardian of the South, this statue also really looks alive to me. Very near to Todaiji is Nigatsudou, just in front of it is a small Shinto shrine, the atmosphere here is wonderful. I believe that Nara Park and Todaiji are really amazing.
